Your torque converter is already installed and fully seated by Monster. Do not remove the converter from the transmission.
Before initial start-up, add the recommended transmission fluid through the fill tube or service port so the unit is not started dry. After installation:
- Start the engine with the vehicle safely on level ground.
- With the brake applied, cycle slowly through all ranges (P–R–N–D–L) and back to Park.
- With the engine at operating temperature and idling in Park, recheck and adjust the fluid level.
Before driving on the new transmission, use a proper scan tool to clear any stored or historic DTCs in the ECU/TCM. Old codes left in memory can cause false diagnostics, erratic shifting, or limp mode with your new unit.
Any debris left in the lines or cooler from the failed transmission can be carried straight into your new Monster unit. We recommend:
- Best practice: Replace the cooler and lines where possible.
- At a bare minimum: Perform a Hot Flush with approved equipment before installation.

For cable-controlled units like the 700R4 or Ford AOD, a correct TV (Throttle Valve) cable setting is absolutely critical. An incorrect setting can:
- Burn clutches in a few miles due to low line pressure.
- Cause late, harsh, or inconsistent shifts.
Follow this setup procedure in the video below or consult the specific Monster instructions for your unit.
Late-model transmissions like the GM 6L80 / 6L90 and Ford 10R80 must be properly programmed and relearned. Skipping this step can cause harsh shifts, no-move conditions, damage to the unit, and can affect warranty coverage.
10R80 Requirements:
- The PCM/TCM must be programmed with the correct 12-digit Solenoid Body Identification Number (SBID) and 13-digit Solenoid Body Strategy Number from the installed valve body.
- After programming, perform the OEM-style Adaptive Learning Drive Cycle so the transmission can learn clutch volumes and shift adaptives.
- Use a capable scan tool and follow Ford’s procedure or have a qualified shop/dealer handle the flash and drive cycle.
6L80 / 6L90 Requirements:
- Use a GM MDI2 or equivalent J2534 pass-thru device with a GM Techline Connect subscription to perform a complete reprogram of the TECHM/TCM when the new transmission is installed.
- OR, using HP Tuners: the original TECHM/TCM must be read out and saved before transmission removal, then written back to the new unit after installation.
- Follow all clutch-relearn and fast-adapt procedures as outlined in the OEM/scan tool workflow.

Do I need to install the torque converter on my Monster Transmission?
No. Your Monster Transmission ships with the torque converter pre-installed and fully seated. You should not remove the converter before installation.
Do I need to flush or replace the transmission cooler with a new transmission?
Yes. Monster strongly recommends replacing the cooler and lines where possible. At a minimum, a proper hot flush with approved equipment is required to remove debris from the failed unit.
Do 6L80/6L90 and 10R80 transmissions require programming after installation?
Yes. The 10R80 requires the solenoid body ID and strategy numbers to be programmed and an adaptive drive cycle completed. 6L80/6L90 units require a full TECHM/TCM reflash with an MDI2/J2534 and GM Techline Connect, or the original file must be read and saved with HP Tuners before removal and written to the new unit.
Final Checklist & Next Steps
Double-check fluid level, verify there are no leaks, confirm all electrical connections are fully seated, and ensure any required programming and adaptive relearns are complete before hard driving.
