48RE vs 47RE?

48RE is the later heavy-duty evolution (common in Ram 2500/3500) with updates aimed at higher torque. We’ll confirm exact fitment by VIN, engine, and GVWR.

Do I need programming after install?

Follow model-year procedures for pressure/TV settings and PCM strategy. Verify line pressure and band adjustments per spec.

Is a torque converter included?

Yes—each build includes a matched lockup converter, calibrated to your weight, gear, tire, and use.

Cooling & maintenance?

Flush/replace cooler & lines, verify strong return flow, and consider auxiliary cooling and in-line filtration for towing or hot climates.

48RE Setup: Pressure Strategy, Cooling, and Install Best Practices

Jump to: Line Pressure & BandsCooling & FluidElectronics (Solenoid/Transducer)Converter MatchingInstall Checklist

Line Pressure & Bands

Verify base and TV/pressure settings after install. Correct band adjustment and healthy apply hardware reduce flare and heat. Recheck after the first heat cycles.

Cooling & Fluid

Heat kills clutches. Flush or replace cooler & lines, confirm strong return flow, and add auxiliary cooling for towing/hot climates. Use fresh, high-quality ATF and set level at operating temperature.

Electronics (Solenoid/Transducer)

Governor pressure solenoid and transducer health is critical. Replace aged components as needed and verify harness integrity during install.

Converter Matching

Stall too low can lug; too high overheats. We include a matched lockup converter based on torque curve, weight, gear, tire, and intended use.

Installation Checklist (quick hits)

  • Flush/replace cooler & lines; verify strong return flow
  • Set fluid level warm; use quality ATF
  • Adjust bands and verify base/TV line pressure
  • Confirm converter is fully seated before install
  • Inspect/replace critical electronics and wiring as needed

48RE Tech FAQs

Do I need tuning?

No external TCM tune is required, but you must verify line pressure strategy and band adjustments appropriate to the vehicle and build.

Best way to extend life under tow?

Keep temps in check with an auxiliary cooler, ensure correct converter selection/lockup strategy, and verify strong return flow after install.
