Reverse pressure & case lug failures
One of the 5R110’s most expensive failure modes is runaway reverse pressure. When the OEM regulator valve and
plastic pressure plugs lose control, case lugs can crack or blow out. StreetMonster and SportMonster address this
with a hardened pressure regulator valve and aluminum pressure plugs in the valve body, keeping pressure in check
and preventing catastrophic case damage.
Clutch counts & torque capacity
Heavy towing, tuning, and big tires load the 5R110’s intermediate, direct, and overdrive elements. SportMonster
increases clutch counts in these critical packs, tightening clearances and improving apply so the transmission
can carry higher torque without flare or slip — ideal for tuned Power Stroke and big trailer duty.
Cooling, deep pans & filtration
Heat is the enemy of any TorqShift. Upgraded late-model sump filters, deep aluminum pans, and a quality auxiliary
cooler help keep Mercon V temps stable on long grades. The StreetMonster’s steel pan with drain plug makes service
easier, while the SportMonster’s deep pan adds capacity and surface area to pull heat out of the oil.
Installation checklist (quick hits)
- Flush or replace cooler & lines until you verify clean, strong return flow.
- Confirm converter is fully seated before pulling the transmission up to the engine.
- Verify correct flexplate and converter fastener torque.
- Set fluid level warm using the correct 5R110 dipstick or plug procedure.
- Recheck for leaks and line routing after the first heat cycles.
Fluid, relearn & towing strategy
Fill with a high-quality full synthetic fluid meeting Mercon V. After install, clear adaptives where possible,
then perform a light-throttle drive cycle that rolls through each gear and lets the truck coast back down.
Avoid heavy towing or full-load runs until the 5R110 has gone through several heat cycles and the adaptives have
had time to settle.
5R110 FAQs (More Depth)
Do I need a tune with a built 5R110?
You don’t need an aggressive tune to run a Monster 5R110, but if you’re already tuned for power,
the added clutch capacity and converter upgrades give you more safety margin under load.
What’s the best way to protect my new 5R110?
Keep it cool (deep pan + cooler), keep it clean (fresh Mercon V and a good filter), and avoid lugging the engine.
Downshift on grades instead of letting the converter slip for long periods.
Can these units handle commercial or RV duty?
Yes — that’s where the SportMonster shines. If your truck lives on a trailer, hauls equipment, or pulls
a heavy RV, SportMonster’s added clutch capacity and cooling upgrades are worth the investment.
