How do I know if I have a 4L60 vs a 4L65?

The easiest way to tell the difference is by checking your vehicle year and engine type:

  • In 1998, GM introduced the LS1 engine and began using the 4L65 in select vehicles.
  • By 1999, trucks with 4.8L, 5.3L, or 6.0L LS engines came with the 4L65.
  • If your vehicle is 1998 or older and does not have an LS engine, you most likely have a 4L60.

Tip: If your vehicle has an LS engine or is from 1999+, use our 4L65 transmission for proper fitment.

Is this transmission compatible with an LS engine?

Yes — but only with an adapter kit. This pre-1999 4L60 can be used behind an LS engine when paired with a:

  • Flexplate adapter
  • Crankshaft spacer

If your vehicle originally came with an LS engine (like a 2003 Silverado), you’ll want to choose our 4L65 transmission instead for direct compatibility.

Great for LS swap projects when used with the correct adapter components.

Can I use a stand-alone controller?

Yes — you can use a standalone transmission controller with this 4L60E, as long as it's designed for non-LS applications.

  • Works great with carbureted engines, early EFI setups, and LS swaps that don’t use factory ECMs.

Tip: Be sure to match the controller to the type of transmission (mechanical vs. electronic) you have.

Does this Transmission include Fluid?

No — fluid must be purchased separately. We offer special discounted prices and even cheaper shipping options when you bundle with our fluid at checkout.

How do I Return my Old Transmission Core?

Returning your core is simple. Once you are ready to return your core, you can initiate the return process in one of two ways:

  • Fill out our Core Return Form (available online) using the button below.
  • Or call our Customer Service Team at 800-708-0087 to schedule your return freight pickup.

Please Note:

  • The customer is responsible for the return shipping cost.
  • A flat-rate fee of $299 will be deducted from your core refund to cover return freight and handling. If Round Trip Shipping is not Prepaid Upfront.
  • The core must be the same model and not cracked or damaged beyond rebuild.
