Chevy Silverado/Sierra • Tahoe/Yukon/Suburban • Camaro/Corvette • 2WD/4WD • StockMonster • StreetMonster • SportMonster • TrackMonster
This is the streamlined, shop-tested walkthrough for installing a Monster 6L80E/6L90E in late-model GM trucks/SUVs and select cars. It blends the factory-correct sequence with the real-world tips our builders and partner shops use daily—so you avoid comebacks, speed up programming, and nail the fluid level/adapts on the first try.

Non-Negotiables (Warranty Essentials)
- Cooler service is mandatory: Use a heated, back-flush machine before install. If you can’t, replace the heat exchanger/cooler assembly and lines. Aerosol “flush” cans do not qualify.
- Correct fluid: DEXRON-VI only. Initial fill 8 qts, then final hot level set (total system ~12.2–12.4 qts minus dyno residual). Always set level by indicator with trans 160–200°F.
- Programming is required: The 6L80/90 uses a TECHM (TCM+valve body electronics). You must reprogram or restore the original file for the vehicle to start/shift.
Tools & Supplies
- Battery maintainer (keep 12–16V during flash)
- J2534 + Techline Connect or HP Tuners (with saved stock TECHM read)
- ATF: DEXRON-VI (ACDelco recommended)
- Heated back-flush cooler machine or new cooler/lines
- Torque wrench, 10–21mm sockets, T50 Torx, pry bars
- Driveshaft tools (u-joint strap bolts), exhaust fastener service kit & new manifold donut gaskets
Removal — Notes from the Bay
Follow factory order. The cliff notes that save time:
- Mark both driveshafts for phasing; tape the u-joint caps so they don’t bail out mid-job.
- Starter access: On K2XX trucks, remove RF wheel & liner—starter drops without wrestling the Y-pipe.
- Exhaust: Unplug all four O2s first. Crack manifold-to-collector nuts through the wheel wells; replace the ring & cone gaskets on reassembly.
- Transfer case: Use a second jack. It’s heavier than it looks.
- Main harness: Pull the white lock tab fully, rotate the 20-pin round connector CCW to release—don’t pry the shell.
Installation — Do It Once, Do It Right
-
Prep dowels & converter alignment
Scotch-Brite the block dowels; light grease. Install dipstick tube seal, then lift the trans and align the converter bolt circle to the flexplate before any bolts go in. Converter must spin freely by hand; do not draw the case in with bolts.
-
Case-to-block bolts
Install all 8 and snug, then torque to 37 lb-ft (50 Nm). Don’t forget the cooler line bracket shares the lower RH bolt.
-
Harness & range selector
Clock the round connector CW until it stops, then seat the white lock. Reattach loom clip. Reinstall the range selector bracket (T50 bolts) and cable/clip.
-
Mounts, crossmember, transfer case
 Follow light- vs heavy-duty torque values (LD: 21mm nuts 70 lb-ft; HD: 21mm 89 lb-ft + 90°). Transfer case nuts: 37 lb-ft (50 Nm).
-
Torque converter bolts
Seat the pilot in the crank via the access port, apply blue Loctite, install all three, then torque to 48 lb-ft (65 Nm). Refit inspection covers (106 lb-in / 12 Nm).
-
Exhaust & O2
Replace donut gaskets (GM 15715548 ring, 15035747 cone). Manifold-to-collector nuts: 37 lb-ft (50 Nm). Reconnect all four O2s.
-
Driveshafts
 Honor your paint marks. Strap bolts: 18 lb-ft (25 Nm). Refit skid shield (top 13mm = 15 lb-ft; others 80 lb-in).
-
Initial fill
Add 8 quarts of DEXRON-VI. You will top off hot after programming/adapts.
TECHM Programming — Step Summary
GM SPS2 (Techline Connect): Buy an SPS2 VIN license at acdelcotds.com. Connect J2534, ignition ON, stable 12–16V. In SPS2, select the transmission controller (w/ or w/o RPO M5U as applicable) and run “Programming.” When complete, clear DTCs.
HP Tuners: If you saved the original TECHM read before removal, write it to the replacement TECHM now so the vehicle will crank/drive. Then proceed with any calibration changes.
Fluid Level, Adapts & Road-Test
- Start engine a few seconds, shut off. Add ~4 more quarts.
- Warm trans to 160–200°F. Cycle D↔R a few times, back to P, recheck hot level and top off to the cross-hatched region.
- Using your scan tool, perform Reset Transmission Adapts (aka “fast learn”) if available.
- Drive learn: 15% throttle 1–4 shifts several times → then 30% throttle to 5–6 once it’s clean. Avoid WOT until shifts are consistent. Recheck hot level after the road test.
Common Pitfalls We See (and How to Avoid Them)
- No crank/no move after install: TECHM wasn’t flashed or wrong module selected—complete SPS2 or rewrite the saved stock file (HP Tuners).
- Harsh or flare shifts: Adapts weren’t reset or drive-learn rushed. Perform Reset Adapts/fast learn; repeat low-throttle learn until clean.
- Over/underfill: The unit holds dyno residual. Always set hot with indicator at 160–200°F after drive cycles.
- Repeat debris codes: Cooler wasn’t hot back-flushed or replaced. Don’t skip it—warranty requires proof.

FAQ
How much fluid does it take?
Total dry capacity is ~12.2–12.4 qts, minus dyno residual inside your unit. Start with 8 qts, program, warm up, then set hot level.
Can I use anything other than DEXRON-VI?
No—DEXRON-VI only for 6L80/6L90 longevity and shift quality.
Do I have to flash if I’m swapping same-year units?
Yes. TECHM must be programmed to the VIN/calibration, or written with your saved stock file.
It won’t go into gear after programming—now what?
Verify programming finished (no DTCs), perform Reset Adapts, ensure shifter cable adjustment, and confirm the converter bolts/pilot are fully seated.
Do I need a cooler upgrade?
Highly recommended for towing/power adders. At minimum, perform a heated back-flush or replace the heat exchanger and lines.
