10R80 Transmission Install Guide (Ford F-150, Expedition & Transit)

Ford F-150 • Expedition • Transit • 2WD/4WD • StreetMonster Series

This is the complete walkthrough for installing a Monster StreetMonster 10R80 transmission and converter. It combines Ford’s OE steps with Monster-verified torque specs, fluid setup, and adaptive learn procedure for a fast, trouble-free install.

Non-Negotiables (Warranty Essentials)

  • Cooler service is mandatory: Use a heated back-flush machine before install. If unavailable, replace the cooler and lines. Aerosol “flush” cans do not qualify.
  • Correct fluid: Ford Mercon ULV (XT-12-QULV) only. Dry capacity ≈ 13 qts; typical refill 7–9 qts after dyno residual. Always check level hot (206–215°F).
  • Programming is required: Solenoid body strategy and ID must be entered via a Ford OEM scan tool or equivalent after install.
Programming overview:
Use Ford IDS/FDRS or equivalent. From Programming → Programmable Parameters → Transmission, enter the 12-digit Solenoid Identification and 13-digit Strategy. Verify values match before writing the file. Perform adaptive learn drive cycle once complete.

Tools & Supplies

  • Ford 307-569 Transmission Line Disconnect Tool
  • High-lift transmission jack with strap
  • Torque wrenches (inch-lb and ft-lb)
  • Mercon ULV fluid (XT-12-QULV)
  • Ford OEM scan tool or equivalent (for solenoid programming)

Removal — Notes from the Bay

  • Disconnect both batteries and raise the vehicle. Remove underbody shields and skid plates.
  • Remove starter motor (disconnect battery, control, and ground cables first).
  • Disconnect cooler lines with tool 307-569; remove auxiliary cooler if equipped.
  • Index-mark all driveshaft flanges before removal. On 4WD models, remove the transfer case after disconnecting driveshafts.
  • Unplug O2 sensors and catalytic monitor connectors. Remove crossmember and transmission mount. Support transmission with jack and strap.
  • Access torque converter nuts through cover; index mark one stud to the flexplate; remove all four nuts.
  • Remove nine bellhousing bolts and carefully lower the unit. Do not let it hang from dowels.

Installation — Do It Once, Do It Right

  1. Prep converter and dowels: Lightly grease pilot hub. Confirm block dowels installed.
  2. Mount the transmission: Align converter and flexplate, hand-tighten bolts. Torque bellhousing to 35 lb-ft (48 Nm) top/side, 26 lb-ft (35 Nm) bottom.
  3. Torque converter nuts: 30 lb-ft (40 Nm). Reinstall access cover.
  4. Support and crossmember: Install mounts and crossmember. Torque insulator and hardware 76 lb-ft (103 Nm); crossmember bolts 85 lb-ft (115 Nm).
  5. Cooler & lines: Verify O-rings, torque fittings 22 lb-ft (30 Nm). Reattach heat shields.
  6. Exhaust & shields: Refit cats with new gaskets (nuts 30 lb-ft / 40 Nm, clamps 41 lb-ft / 55 Nm). Install heat shields (177 lb-in / 20 Nm).
  7. Starter: Bolts 35 lb-ft (48 Nm); ground 18 lb-ft (24 Nm); solenoid control 53 lb-in (6 Nm); battery cable 106 lb-in (12 Nm).
  8. Reconnect harnesses and reinstall underbody shields (30 lb-ft / 40 Nm).

Fluid Fill & Adaptive Learn

  1. Remove fill plug and dip indicator. Add Mercon ULV until fluid reaches bottom of “B” range (cold).
  2. Start engine, shift through all ranges (5 s each), return to Park, recheck level cold.
  3. Warm trans to 206–215°F (96–101°C), check hot level (should be in “B” or at 5–6). Top off as needed.
  4. Perform Adaptive Learning Drive Cycle: 15 % throttle 1-8 shifts at 1300–1600 rpm; then 30 % throttle 8-9-10 shifts to 55 mph; gentle stop; N ↔ R ↔ D sequence; repeat six times.
Line Pressure Check (M10×1.00 port):
StreetMonster calibration raises line pressure for improved clutch hold. Expect 110–120 psi no-throttle and 230–260 psi WOT in key gears.

Common Pitfalls & Fixes

  • No movement after install: Solenoid strategy not programmed. Re-enter 12-/13-digit codes via scan tool.
  • Flare or harsh shifts: Adaptive cycle incomplete. Repeat drive-learn once fluid is at temp.
  • Over/underfill: Always check hot (206–215°F) with engine running in Park.
  • Repeat debris codes: Cooler not flushed. Heated back-flush or replacement is required for warranty.

FAQ

What fluid does the 10R80 require?
Only Ford Mercon ULV (XT-12-QULV). Do not substitute other fluids.

Do I need to reprogram the transmission?
Yes. Every 10R80 replacement requires entering the solenoid body identification and strategy codes via scan tool.

How much fluid should I add initially?
Start with ~7 quarts, then adjust hot. Total system capacity ≈ 13 quarts (with converter and cooler dry).

Can I skip cooler flushing?
No. Heated back-flush or full replacement is required for warranty coverage.
