4l65e sport monster

Installed the sport monster in my 2004 GMC Sierra 1500 with the 5.3 that I have done some work too about three days ago so far I’ve put about 50 miles on it. I did the hot flush on all the lines and remove the old cooler and went with the oversized Mishimoto trans cooler. Running the lube guard trans fluid that they sent with. It drove about 50 miles so far going to do the 500 mile break-in. Its shifts really firm and I’m really pleased with everything. No leaks. The stall converter drives great and locks up great. I am pleased with my purchase so far! Excited to break it in and see what this thing will really do!

BUILT 4L65E SPORT MONSTER

I've gone through 2 "Built Transmissions" in 1.5 yrs from a local shop. First one lost all gears except 1st, second one lost 3-4 and I wasn't nearly as hard on it as the first. So, purchased from Monster and so far (still in the 500 mile breakin) it's GREAT! I can feel the internals while driving unlike a stock unit. Ya'll know what I mean. I don't think I'll be buying from local shops anymore!!

Solid Build!

After purchasing another competitors 4L65E at a reduced price and a similar advertised HP rating - I learned the hard way that not all builds are the same. It didn't even last 300 miles before 1st and 3rd gear left the chat. Once I received the the Sport Monster I could instantly tell the build quality was different. Deep pan - billet servo and billet torque converter. I was confident that the advertised parts were certainly inside the transmission as well. I installed the transmission, new trans cooler lines and a new remote stacked transmission cooler. Initial driving and the transmission shifts better and runs cooler (155deg on a hot day) I am assured that it can handle to power - plus the warranty gives me a peace of mind. I would highly recommend Monster Transmissions. The price is right, the support is great and the quality is above par. I used Monster to replace my stock 5.8l Bronco 4AOD transmission and that one has also held up exceptionally with daily driving and occasional off road adventures. Monster is a company I will definitely use again

How do I know if I have a 4L60 vs a 4L65?

The easiest way to tell the difference is by checking your vehicle’s year and engine type:

  • In 1998, GM introduced the LS1 engine and began using the 4L65.
  • By 1999, trucks with 4.8L, 5.3L, or 6.0L LS engines came factory-equipped with the 4L65.
  • If your vehicle is 1998 or older and does not have an LS engine, it likely has a 4L60.

Tip: If your vehicle is from 1999+ and has an LS engine, use our 4L65 transmission for proper fitment.

Can the 4L65 handle a cammed or boosted LS engine?

Yes! Our upgraded 4L65 builds are ideal for cammed and even boosted LS-powered vehicles.

  • For moderate cams and street use, choose our StreetMonster 4L65 with a stall converter.
  • For setups making 450 HP or more, upgrade to our SportMonster or TrackMonster for maximum reliability and performance.

All units are dyno-tested.

Is the 4L65 stronger than the 4L60E?

Yes — the 4L65 is a stronger version of the 4L60E from the factory.

  • It features upgraded internal components including the input shaft, planetaries, and sun shell.
  • Designed specifically for LS-based applications and trucks from 1999+.
  • Our upgraded versions can handle over 600 HP, with the TrackMonster 4L65 rated for 1000 HP.

While both can be built strong, the 4L65 is the better platform for high-output LS builds.

Will I need to reflash my PCM after install?

No reflash or tuning is required for 4L60 or 4L65 replacements in factory applications.

  • Simply disconnect the battery during install and clear all DTC/fault codes before driving.
  • The vehicle’s PCM will relearn shift strategy automatically.
  • We include a full step-by-step guide in our Installation Manual

Proper code clearing and Installation is key to smooth operation and long-term performance.

Does this Transmission include Fluid?

No, fluid must be purchased separately. We offer special discounted prices and even cheaper shipping options when you bundle with our fluid at checkout.

How do I Return my Old Transmission Core?

Returning your core is simple. Once you are ready to return your core, you can initiate the return process in one of two ways:

  • Fill out our Core Return Form (available online) using the button below.
  • Or call our Customer Service Team at 800-708-0087 to schedule your return freight pickup.

Please Note:

  • The customer is responsible for the return shipping cost.
  • A flat-rate fee of $364 will be deducted from your core refund to cover return freight and handling. If Round Trip Shipping is not Prepaid Upfront.
  • The core must be the same model and not cracked or damaged beyond rebuild.
